Bees can be annoying and problematic all year long, but generally they become the worst in the fall. As bees emerge from hibernation in the summer, they live life to the fullest just as fall begins. While spring and summer tend to be the prominent months for bees or wasps, being prepared for the fall weather ahead isn’t a bad idea. Pros & Cons Of Bees In The Ecosystem

Bees are actually some of the most harmless of all stinging insects and they play a vital role in pollination, as well as other benefits to our ecosystem. Here are some of the main pros and cons bees play in our daily lives.

Pros:

  • Pollination – To germinate, some plants require the transfer of pollen from the male part of the flower to the female part. As these insects move from flower to flower in search of nectar, they leave behind grains of pollen on the sticky surface, allowing plants to grow and produce food.
  • Wild Plant Growth – Many species of wild plants depend on insect pollinators as well. Bees are responsible for the production of many seeds, nuts, berries, and fruit, which serve as a vital food source for wild animals.
  • Food Source – Bees produce honey to feed their colonies during the cold winter months. Critters like birds, raccoons, opossums, and insects will raid beehives for nutritious honey and bee larvae. They themselves are also a part of the food chain. At least 24 species of birds prey on bees. Many spiders and insects eat them as well.
  • Wildlife Habitats – Bees’ role as pollinators is vital in the growth of tropical forests, savannah woodlands, and temperate deciduous forests. Many tree species, like willows and poplars, couldn’t grow without pollinators like bees.
  • Biodiversity – Bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small. Bees contribute to complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to co-exist.

Cons:

Although there are many pros of having these insects in the ecosystem, there are also a few cons. It is believed that if bees continue to pollinate over an extensive period of time, there is a possibility that it could introduce new diseases. It is also believed that they can hurt the environment. This is because they are not native to North America and were believed to be imported from Europe in the 1600s. These foreign insects have taken much of the habitat from native bees, thus putting a strain/altering the function of the ecosystem. Lastly, the biggest con of bees is their painful stings. Because their stingers are barbed, they often remain inside the skin, releasing more venom and causing more pain.

Bee Control & Prevention

Bees will try just about anything to stay alive during colder weather. If they are able to find any small opening in your home, they’ll make their way in. To prevent bees from entering your home or business here are a few preventative tips.

  • Ensure all entry points are sealed. Check screens for any holes or gaps. Don’t forget rotted areas under siding, spaces under your windowsills and in your attic.
  • Remove items that produce sweet scents that bees are attracted to. Any opportunity you have to draw them away from your home, the better.
  • Bees like sugar, especially in the fall, so if you have any juice or soda sitting out, dispose of it ASAP. The cleaner you keep your home, the less likely bees will try to sneak in.
  • Properly disposing of trash and recycling is a must. Keep a lid on your outdoor trash cans so bees can’t crawl inside.

 

The surest way to locate problem areas is to watch where bees are entering or exiting your home. If it’s already gotten to that point, they’ve most likely started a nest. Tackling nests on your own is risky and highly ill-advised.
